Holiday Research/Sketchbook Pages

During the holiday break, I dedicated my time to conducting extensive research on Coca Cola and its vending machines. I collected physical Coca Cola cans and made it a point to visit numerous vending machines to observe their designs and functionality. I was intrigued by the visual aesthetics and cultural significance surrounding Coca Cola, as well as its presence in everyday life.

However, upon returning to class and presenting my initial theme focused on Coca Cola vending machines, I received feedback from my tutor. He pointed out that the theme was too narrow and lacked excitement, prompting me to reconsider my approach. It was a challenging moment as I had invested a significant amount of time and effort into my initial research.

I took the feedback and brainstormed alternative themes that could captivate both my interest and the audience. After much contemplation, I found inspiration in Japanese toy stores. This new theme sparked my curiosity and offered a more dynamic and engaging subject matter.

To delve deeper into the world of Japanese toy stores, I utilized various research methods. I borrowed a book from the Chelsea library that delved into the realm of traditional Japanese toys. This resource served as a valuable starting point, providing historical context and insights into the cultural significance of these toys. I immersed myself in the pages, carefully studying the different types of toys, their designs, and their connections to Japanese culture.

Additionally, I expanded my research by exploring online articles, academic websites, and books that explored the evolution of Japanese toy stores and the products they offered. This comprehensive approach allowed me to gain a broader understanding of the topic and uncover interesting visual and cultural elements that I could incorporate into my project.
